HE BAHAMAS: The Bahamian Ministry of Health denies rumours that a 17-year-old high-school student died from dengue fever, which is currently on the rise in the country.

Health and Wellness Minister Hon. Dr. Michael Darville has stated that investigations are ongoing into the death of Chykino "Kenny" Thompson, the Central Eleuthera High School student who passed away on Sunday, October 1st, 2023.

According to the boy’s mother, he tested positive for dengue fever and was prescribed Motrin. Health officials in the Bahamas disclosed that only one person from the school - a woman in her 30s - has tested positive for dengue.

So far, the country is monitoring a total of 168 confirmed cases of dengue, with the majority of cases located in New Providence. Regrettably, the country has recorded one fatality due to dengue fever. Saint Lucian Health authorities are also monitoring the aedes aegypti mosquito for a possible outbreak on-island. Despite the heat, citizens are urged to wear long sleeve shirts and long trousers.
