This accomplishment elevates the lab to the status of a Centre of Excellence for Forensic Science in the Caribbean. Fernanda Henry, the lab's Director, affirms that the administration is implementing new strategies and services to enhance its capabilities in meeting forensic needs.
“We have added an extension with a vehicle examination bay for secure and controlled forensic examinations of motor vehicles of all kinds. And a new crime scene unit as we work towards a transition of the crime officers of the RSLPF to the forensic science services for a more scientific approach to crime scene investigations,” Henry says. She adds that the Lab is responding to the current scourge of gun-related crimes through a proactive approach.
“We have added a firearms unit to respond to the crippling exponential increase of gun violence in our nation. We are working with the coroner to revamp and improve death investigations in Saint Lucia by establishing an independent office of the coroner,” she said.
The Lab received its certification from the International Electro-Technical Commission and the International Organisation for Standardisation, making it the highest-ranked lab in the Eastern Caribbean. Henry says the lab will play its part in solving crimes.
