SLHTA Welcomes the Opening of Cruise Season

aint Lucia Hospitality and Tourism Association CEO Noorani Azeez says association members are thrilled about the recommencement of the cruise season.

However, he adds, members still believe the sector has untapped potential. He says given the current economic environment, diversification is needed for the growth of the industry.

While it bodes very well for vendors and others who ply their trade for those operators I think from an environmental and economic point of view, we need to start looking at how we can drive employment and other socioeconomic activities by opening up other areas where we can have day trippers visit and recreate meaningfully,” he explained. The opportunities of the season are not lost on him, he adds. He continues, “Other operators as well feel that there are some long-standing issues that as a country we have yet to reach conclusion on, when it comes to how we share common spaces with visitors on the island. Our beach area is a classic example.”

In other Caribbean countries, like Jamaica, locals are denied access to certain beaches once resorts are built. Many Saint Lucians have expressed their fear that the same will be the norm. The Government has, however, maintained its position that citizens will continue having access to beaches despite the presence of hotels or foreigners.

Azeez notes that despite the concerns, SLHTA members are still looking forward to this year’s cruise season. “For some the promise of an improved and increased visitor arrival through the cruise sector holds a lot of potential, optimism and excitement,” confessed.

Azeez says the Association will continue lobbying for the needs of its members. “We’re hopeful that as we continue to engage with individuals who are vulnerable and at risk, we can get a better sense of what their needs and aspirations are and provide them opportunities to access meaningful livelihoods,” he says.

The 2022/2023 Cruise Ship season opened on Sunday, October 8 with the arrival of the Carnival Venezia.
