n an attempt to make youth more marketable in the job market, the National Skills Development Centre is asserting the importance of skills certification.

Knowing a skill is different from being certified in it, the organisation says. The NSDC took part in a Ministry of Youth Development-led job fair, where PRO Dean Jules, informed youth the importance of certification.

We’re excited to be a part of this job fair, where we can show the youth the different avenues whereby they can participate in their own job creation. We’re looking at embracing different skills that are entrepreneurial, such as nail design [technicians], hair design, cake-making, and decorating and pastry-making,” Jules said. Since opening its doors in 2002, the NSDC has provided skills development training for all citizens of Saint Lucia.

The job fair coordinator from the Ministry, Nazan Hutchinson, says it is crucial for youth to be made aware of the opportunities available to them.

We saw that there was a lack of effort by the young people to find employment so we brought the work to them. We have 15 businesses represented here and the turnout today, I believe, was great,” she says.

The government is working to ensure citizens are given skills development training and opportunities. The Youth Economy, the largest grant disbursement organisation in Saint Lucia, also prioritises skills development.
