his year’s upcoming Creole Heritage Month celebrations will focus on family and youth engagement.

Under the theme, “Creole: Root of the People”, this year’s celebrations focus on the irremovable nature of culture from Saint Lucians. FRC Executive Director, Rhyesa Joseph, announced that the FRC will be hosting two distinct activities for both families and youth in order to awaken their creole spirit.

The first activity is Fèsten Jwé, Festival of Games. You can go out with your children to play traditional games in the communities of Mabouya Valley on the 15th of October at 3pm in the Aux Lyon gap, and on the 22nd of October in the churchyard of the Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Babonneau,” Joseph explained. This activity, she notes, is geared towards bringing families together. She adds that families are able to witness traditional games.

You have the opportunity to take your children out to play rounders, Chinese skip, to see wowee in action being played. I’m sure many people may be asking what is wowee, you have a chance to go in these communities to see and experience,” she says.

Joseph says a social media campaign is underway by the FRC which will appeal to young people. “The second activity is a social media competition. We are asking young people what the theme behind Creole Heritage Month this year, Kwéyol: Wasin Pep-la, means to them. Young people will have an opportunity to share in a video less than a minute long what the theme means to them,” she says.

The FRC Executive Director went on to explain the guidelines for video submissions. “They will submit their videos to the FRC’s [email address] at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. We will upload these videos to our site and the public will get the chance to vote on their favourite video by liking the videos. So this is an opportunity for young people to express what Creole: Root of the People means to them. They also have the opportunity to win a range of prizes,” she explains. The competition spans the month of October.

The events for Creole Heritage Month started on October 4th and culminates on Sunday, October 29th 2023.
