The Commissioner noted that she was unable to go into detail at present, but would be updating the public in “short order”.
“We are looking in the sexual harassment investigation. In short order, I will give you some more details as to the progress we’ve made as it relates to the investigation,” Descartes-Pelius said. Public discourse surrounding police officers accused of sexual harassment was sparked by the Police Welfare Association, who claimed complaints were made against a member of the RSLPF high command. Descartes-Pelius, however, did not disclose the officer, or officers, under investigation.
The Commissioner also commented on the larger issue of the workplace concerns of police officers. She says adequate dialogue with the members of the force is needed in order to properly address their concerns.
“It is important that we find time to dialogue with the men and women of the organisation to find out what their concerns are, what they can do better, and also to encourage them to make recommendations as to how we can make working conditions better for them. Also, it is important to remind the officers that whatever they do on or off duty impacts the organisation and the image of the organisation. Whatever they do should impact the image positively,” the Commissioner urged.
During the climax of the PWA’s call for investigations into the allegations, the Prime Minister had advocated for a sexual harassment policy for the RSLPF. This, he said, will allow the organisation to handle these issues internally.
