In 2020, Mr. Cheng embarked on a mission to bring the vibrant culinary diversity and flavours of the English-speaking Caribbean to Taiwan. His approach involved reaching out to the Embassies of these Caribbean nations, fostering an engaging collaboration.
On October 30, 2023, Saint Lucia joined the list of other English-speaking Caribbean countries. The promotion will span two months, commencing on November 1st, 2023 and culminating on December 31st, 2023. Eight dishes will be prepared for public consumption in Taiwan: Saint Lucia’s iconic green fig and salt fish, pigtail and red bean bouillon, daal, coconut cake, accra and stewed park with ground provisions. Saint Lucia’s Embassy in Taiwan will provide guidance on the preparation of the dishes. Ambassador Dr. Robert Lewis expressed Saint Lucia’s appreciation for the gesture as a form of cultural exchange and diplomacy.
“ABV must be commended for providing that useful and necessary bridge between the people of Saint Lucia and the people of the Republic of China (Taiwan). We salute you for your contribution in helping to strengthen the people-to-people ties in our journey of making our peoples get to know each other in more significant and culturally beneficial ways,” Dr. Lewis explained.
This initiative has given rise to the introduction of "culinary months" over the past three years. As a result, delectable dishes from Belize, Haiti, Saint Christopher and Nevis, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines have become permanent fixtures on the menu at the Bar.
