Director of Corrections Verne Garde disclosed that the effort to locate the firearm has been ongoing for almost two weeks now.
“One of my very senior managers is currently in a situation where he has misplaced the firearm assigned to him,” Garde explained. Garde added that both BCF and RSLPF officers are engaged in the investigations, and the senior officer remains on duty.
Despite the missing weapon, Garde says the staff of the BCF are committed and trained to handle every possibility. “We receive initial training as Correctional Officers and we expect all eventualities. Most of the scenarios placed on us on a day-to-day basis are scenarios that we are prepared for because we are prepared for insurrections. We are prepared for riots. We are prepared for different things on a daily basis,” Garde explained.
The Director of Corrections added that the BCF is working tirelessly to reduce the number of contraband items in the facility in an operation called ‘Mission Clean sweep’.
“We cleared the facility of all the contraband that was there and we are confident that we have done a good job in that regard. In fact, the police, the Fire Service, and everybody else assisted us in that mission, so it was well done,” he said.
This operation resulted in the seizure of over 140 mobile telephones, marijuana and hundreds of other contraband items at the Bordelais Correctional Facility (BCF). Officers are said to have seized about 1, 500 contraband items.
