At 8:05 pm on November 28, 2023, as the flight departed Saint Lucia, the Air Traffic Control Tower reported observing fireworks in the vicinity of Trouya, Gros Islet, approximately 2.6 miles north-northeast of the airport.
“The incident highlights a growing issue with the unauthorised use of fireworks, helium-filled toy balloons, drones, and sky lanterns in Saint Lucia, posing significant threats to aviation safety. Such activities can divert pilots’ attention and potentially lead to damage during critical flight operations,” a statement from the Ministry of Civil Aviation read.
With the festive season fast approaching, the use of fireworks and other airborne objects will increase. The airport authority reminds citizens of the risk these objects pose.
“Helium-filled toy balloons and sky lanterns, in particular, present dangers, with the potential for engine damage and the introduction of Foreign Object Debris (FOD) on airport runways. Proximity to aerodromes during crucial flight phases, like take-off and landing, intensifies the risks associated with these activities,” the Ministry advised.
The Ministry reminds citizens to obtain the required approval before launching these objects into the air.
