Tourism Minister Ernest Hilaire, present at the launch, said this new community jazz is in keeping with the government’s commitment to making communities part of the jazz experience.
“We wanted a very significant participation by communities. We felt the Jazz we know in Saint Lucia, is not jazz as long as communities are not involved. And for us, that's really critical,” he said.
Hilaire adds it is important for citizens to feel ownership of the Jazz festivals.
“So last year we made a special appeal to communities to be part of it, make it Saint Lucian Jazz as we know it, something that Saint Lucians can own and see as belonging to themselves.”
Castries South East MP, Joachim Henry, says the move is in an effort to make constituents display their talents and creativity.
“Therefore, to bring jazz in Bexon is to allow Bexon to be part of the stage, be part of those who perform - those who celebrate, those who contribute. As you can observe, the constituency of Castries South East is endowed with quite a bit of talent and a whole host of resources,” he said.
Hills and Valleys Jazz Committee Member, Robert Rene, says the activity will be family-friendly.
“The concert doesn't start at 1 pm. We have everything before the concert. And when I say everything, I mean everything. We're taking the train from Castries and we're bringing it to Bexon. It's not for the tourists alone, it's for our children too and so on. They're going to enjoy some painting, we're going to also have some wonderful cuisine. So you're going to see special West Indian foods being made at Hills and Valleys. So you see I have not even mentioned the concert yet and you know that you are going to have a wonderful time,” he said,
The event is free of charge and the public is encouraged to attend.
