French Ambassador, H.E Francis Etienne, says the French government has a keen interest in the well-being of Saint Lucia as many French nationals reside and work on the island.
“As you know, we are part of the community. There is a small section of French people residing, working, and sending their kids to school here in Saint Lucia. So we are not away from the community. We are part of it. Our people are concerned,” the Ambassador explained.
The Ambassador says this crime specialist will work alongside the RSLPF, sharing ideas, intelligence, and skills.
He notes that Saint Lucia maintains a very important relationship with Martinique as many of the foreign inmates in Martinique are from Saint Lucia.
“Now, if you look at the stats, some concerning stats, 50% of foreigners incarcerated in Martinique are from Saint Lucia. I'm not speaking about all the inmates. I'm speaking only about foreigners. But the strong proportion of them, then 50% is a lot, is coming from Saint Lucia.”
Tackling the trade of illegal firearms between Martinique and the southern Caribbean has been a strategic point for the French government. Saint Lucia finds itself in the crossfire of this illicit trade.
Prime Minister and Minister for National Security, Hon. Philip J. Pierre met with Mr. Gérald Darmanin, Minister for the Interior and Overseas Territories of the Republic of France, and his delegation which included President Serge Letchimy and the Prefect of Martinique, Mr. Jean Christophe Bouvier to Saint Lucia for discussions aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation between the two countries. The meeting held March 15, 2024 focused on the key areas of security, health, and education.
