ivina Alexis-Scott, a teacher at the Dunnottar School, appeals on behalf of persons with Down syndrome, stressing that they are just as capable as any human being.

Local Special-Ed teachers joined in commemorating World Down Syndrome Day on March 21st, under the theme “End the Stigma”. Well-wishers and sympathisers wore different coloured socks to mark the occasion.

Alexis-Scott says such activities are needed as it helps remind the general populace that differently-abled people can contribute to the welfare of society.

The general public should know that people with Down syndrome are normal human beings. They are just differently-abled. They may not be able to do all the things that we are able do, but they can be successful if given a chance in society,” she explained.

She implores Saint Lucians to continue showing love and affection for people with Down syndrome.

People need to be more sensitive to their needs and what they're going through and to show that sort of love, care, and affection, that concern for them and not have that stereotype for the students and the people living with Down syndrome.”

On March 21st, Special-Ed schools met to host their annual Inter Special Schools Sports Meet.
