Caught between the allure of football and the call of the track, Moncherry says he’s had an on-again, off-again relationship with athletics, but finally returned to the field at 17-years-old.
“I started with football at 2-years-old but I stopped to do track-and-field at 6-years-old and continued until I was 10. I eventually quit to focus on football full-time, taking part in multiple tournaments. When I turned 17, one of my friends brought me back into [running] since I was a good long-distance runner. It led me to where I am today,” he explained.
Since returning to the track, Moncherry has run the 2024 Independence Games and National Junior Championships and medalled in both these races.
“I ran the [2024] Independence Games and National Junior Championships. I ran the 800 metres and 1500 metres and I placed 3rd and 2nd respectively,” he said.
He says he aspires to attend university and compete among other international long-distance runners.
“I want to go to college overseas where there’s a tougher competition. It will force me to improve.”
The sprinter says his greatest struggles are internal and he’s working to conquer them daily.
“There’s a lot of internal conflict about my future and choosing the sport that felt right for me.”
