Conserve: Recent Rainfall Insufficient to End Water Emergency

Wednesday, Jun 05

"F

rom what we're seeing, the rains that we have gotten is not enough.

We would still like the general public to conserve water. The aquifers have not yet charged,” said WASCO Senior Officer, Aly Anderson, on the recent rains which visited the country.

The country experienced increased rainfall over the last few days as the hurricane season began.

The Water and Sewerage Company says while this weather is welcome, the quantity of rainfall is still not enough to return Saint Lucia’s water status to normalcy.

As they encouraged prior, WASCO is expecting consumers to conserve their water.

From a utility standpoint, the rain is welcome. However, there is a need to continue conserving. As you would imagine, we had a lot of overland flow, so our aquifers are not really charged as yet. Hence the reason why a lot of our rural systems are still not performing as well,” explained WASCO’s Chief Operating Officer, Aly Anthony.

As such, WASCO says, the Water Emergency is still in effect, noting the importance of increasing the country’s water harvesting capacity.

The declaration order is still in effect. It has not been lifted yet.”

This Water Emergency prohibits the use of potable water for non-drinking purposes.
