In spite of all the assistance that we are giving you today, we must do what is right,” encouraged Agriculture Minister Hon. Alfred Prospere.
At a ceremony held on May 31st, 2024, 244 farmers, ripeners, and exporters received compensation for the devastating impact of crop spoilage, totalling $953,505.50, caused by the shortage of packaging material.
The Minister reminds farmers of the importance of producing high-quality bananas for consumption locally and for export. Prospere says despite the numerous hurdles faced by farmers due to climatic conditions, they must continue to persevere.
In return, he assured them that the government would provide them with assistance.
“We are in it together, we are in this as a country. Our cabinet will continue to work with you and provide the support that you need.”
While agricultural assistance was estimated to be around half a million dollars, further investigations revealed that a significantly more sum would be needed to cover farmers’ losses.
“The journey to this significant moment was fraught with challenges. From the aftermath of Tropical Storm Bret, which ravaged banana and plantain cultivation, to the logistical hurdles of procuring sufficient packaging material, farmers faced unprecedented hardships. Despite these trials, the government's swift action and collaboration with stakeholders ensured that those affected received timely support,” said Prime Minister Pierre during the cheque handover ceremony.
Moving forward, local box manufacturer, WINERA, is back to producing shipment carts for agricultural export.
