n June 7th, 2024, Micoud fishermen welcomed their new T-shaped jetty in the Praslin Bay, commissioned by their MP, Jeremiah Norbert.

Cameron Taliam, a fisherman and boat owner of Micoud, explained the difficulties of the trade without a jetty. Sargassum, which has plagued the island’s east coast for years, has been a hindrance for fishermen who go out into the Atlantic.

We build boats right by the sea. The sargassum has been affecting us, and now we have a jetty. We do not have to go into that slimy sargassum. And that would leave me out of money when the sargassum is there. And with the jetty now, I know my guys will go out there and work hard to do what they have to do,” he said.

Prior to this project, fishers had to use a floating jetty made of plastic and bound together by rope. Taliam says this structure was not up to par.

The plastic structure didn't work because we are from the East Coast, and the sea is rough on the East Coast, so that messed up the plastic structure.”

Taliam expressed his gratitude to the government for completing the long-overdue structure.

I'm more than happy with what we have. We didn't have anything, but now we have something. Thanks to the government that we have right now. I'm very thankful. Thanks for keeping your promise. You promised us that you're going to give us a jetty, and you did that.”

For decades, fishermen awaited a long-promised jetty by successive MPs. However, establishing himself as an MP of his word, Norbert made good on his promise to finally construct a jetty alongside a washroom facility.
