Officers Should Abstain from Politics while in the Force

"W

e take an oath to protect and serve and we have a responsibility to ensure that we don't engage openly in politics,” said Crime Prevention Minister and former cop, Hon. Jeremiah Norbert

Is politics finding a home in the police force? Former police officer and now government minister Jeremiah Norbert says political biases can’t be prevented. However, he notes, officers should abstain from engaging in politics while in the police service.

We should never allow our political biases to prevent us from doing the work that we've been paid to do. And we see it happening. I mean, I don't want to point out the particular examples, but we've seen it happening on numerous occasions where police officers, through different means, find ways to engage in the politics of today,” he said.

On the part of the government, the Minister says the RSLPF should be allowed to operate independently and should not be handicapped by the country’s leaders.

I think the Prime Minister has said it on numerous occasions where we refuse to engage in the affairs of the police.”

Despite the day’s government, Norbert encourages officers to maintain their integrity.

The police also have a responsibility to not allow politics to prevent them because they're getting a salary. And it doesn't matter if it is the Saint Lucia Labour Party or the United Workers' Party that is in government,” he explained.

Some recent statements by notable police officers against the sitting administration have called into question the impartiality of law enforcement and the integrity of the public service.
