Are Families Complacent in Criminal Behaviour?

"E

very time a criminal is shot and killed, we hear he was a good boy. No, he wasn’t!” explained Community Activist and Rise St Lucia Director, Venus Cherry.

The country recorded four homicides over the course of the weekend as gang warfare unfurled in the north of the island. Police investigators have assured that the perpetrators will be brought to justice and have made arrests in prior cases thus far.

In the wake of these killings, families have been asked to cooperate with law enforcement, especially if their members are involved in criminal or gang activity.

Community Activist, Venus Cherry, is adamant that families are aware of their members’ criminal involvement but choose to conceal that knowledge. In the end, he says, only hurt follows.

So when the media comes to you, say “No Comment” if you don't wanna say that he lived and died in the same manner. Too many times we know they have illegal guns. You know they are robbing people. You'll know they are shooting people. You'll know they are killing people. You'll stay quiet,” he said.

Meanwhile, the mother of one of the weekend’s casualties says parents need to up their game in raising their children. Withholding her name, she says oftentimes friends may prove to be bad influences, encouraging others to engage in crime.

Honestly speaking, everybody keeps on saying you need to speak to your kids. But then you see friends, bad friends influence followers. But we parents, I think we need to continue speaking to our youths because trust me, I don't want anybody to feel what I am feeling there. I'm empty inside. I'm broken.” she said.

Since last year, rival gangs have been raging and claiming numerous lives, most of which are young men.

These victims are often pictured on their social media platforms brandishing firearms and other weapons.
