With both sides already through to the next stage, the two-time champions West Indies dispatched a much-fancied Afghanistan side in front of a massive crowd at the DSCG. Pooran’s eight sixes helped West Indies rack up 218 for 5, the highest score of the tournament and the highest score in a T20 International at the venue.
The hosts were 85 for 1 after five overs with 36 runs coming from the fourth, equalling the record for the most expensive over in men’s T20 Internationals. Pooran was eventually run out in the final over desperately trying to keep the strike in search of his century.
The West Indies' dominance continued into Afghanistan’s chase when Akeal Hosein had Rahmanullah Gurbaz caught for a three-ball duck in a wicket maiden to start things off. The West Indies picked up wickets regularly and Afghanistan were bowled out for 114 in 16. 2 overs. Left arm pacer, Obed McCoy took three for 14, Akeal Hosein two for 21, and Gudakesh Motie two for 28 respectively.
West Indies and England play on Wednesday, June 19, at the DSCG at 8.30 p.m in their first super eight encounter.
