ourism Minister Ernest Hilaire assures that the government has placed comprehensive security measures in place to ensure the safety of patrons at the upcoming ICC World Cup matches in Saint Lucia starting June 15th.

This announcement follows a terror threat made at the Cricket West Indies group by the Islamic State-Khorasan (IS-K).

Hilaire says the government has placed all national security efforts in place to ensure all forms of violence are contained.

There's a lot that is in place and has been put in place. Obviously, I cannot give you a detailed account of the security measures and the intelligence measures that are in place, but the point is, there's quite a lot that has been done,” the Minister said.

Having prior experience hosting the 2007 World Cup in Saint Lucia, Dr Hilaire says the local organising committee is well-equipped to pull off this year’s World Cup.

Similarly, for this tournament, there will be the infrastructure put in place both locally, regionally, and internationally to ensure the safety of the games. And I have no doubt in my mind that everything will be done to make sure that patrons who do come in will be safe and secure.”

Meanwhile, the International Cricket Council and CWI responded with a joint statement assuring stakeholders of the security measures in place.

"We work closely with authorities in the host countries and cities, and continually monitor and evaluate the global landscape to ensure appropriate plans are in place to mitigate any risks identified to our event," the statement said.

The 20-team T20 World Cup will be played in nine venues, six of them in the West Indies and three in the United States. The tournament runs from June 1st to 29th, with Barbados scheduled to host the final.
