Families Disappointed In DPP’s Address; Cry Out for Justice

Thursday, Jun 20

"O

utstanding lines of inquiry need to be explored,” said DPP Greene in relation to some criminal matters of concern during his public address on June 19th 2024.

The address by the Director of Public Prosecutions, Daarsrean Greene, sought to update the public on the status of outstanding matters currently under investigation. However, affected families have since come out, expressing their disappointment in Greene’s statements.

The case of Kimberly De Leon, who was shot and killed at her Morne Fortune residence on October 29th 2018, is currently active, but no arrests have been made to-date.

Her mother, Mary Williams, made an appearance at the DPP’s media conference and requested clarification on the progress of her daughter’s matter.

Speaking to reporters after, Williams says she is extremely frustrated with the pace of investigations.

The DPP shied away from a lot of the questions even when I tried to ask him on behalf of my daughter’s case. He tried to shut me up so that the public would not know some of the things that I know. If the police are not forthcoming, then he has a right to call them and ask how far they have gotten with this case and that is why I said to him that there is a breakdown or lack of communication,” she said emotionally.

Williams explained further that she has also been in communication with the RSLPF, but they have failed to provide concrete answers to her questions.

I've had meetings with the police and they’re not giving me anything good to go on, just lies. if you are telling me there’s nowhere in the world you can send to get what you want tested, that’s a blatant lie,” she said.

The family of Chakadan Daniel is also holding on to hope that they will get justice for their deceased loved one.

On Wednesday, October 23th, 2013, 22-year-old Daniel, a resident of Micoud, was found hanging from his cell while a prisoner at the Micoud Police Station. In July 2015, an inquest into Daniel's death ruled that he was unlawfully killed.

His mother, Frances Daniel, is adamant that the officers responsible for the death of her son need to be charged.

If the inquest says they are guilty, the DPP has no investigation to do other than to arrest the officers. They did it. Why are y’all not arresting the policemen - that’s the first question I want to ask,” she said.

Daniel explains that she will continue fighting for justice as best as she can.

I went to the commissioner of police, I went to the government, I went to the past prime minister already and the present. I've been to everybody and they have me suffering. I’m crying. I want justice for my child,” she said.

In the case of Chakadan Daniel, DPP Greene said:

Outstanding lines of inquiry to be explored, which includes forensic testing in relation to exhibits recovered in this matter. These exhibits to date, from my understanding, have not been submitted for testing to-date. Therefore, based on the evidence reviewed thus far, I find that the investigation of Chakadan Daniel is incomplete and as such I urge the Commissioner of Police to cause these outstanding matters in the course of the investigation to be addressed,” he said.

The cases of Arnold Joseph and Oliver Gobat are still under investigation, the DPP explained.
