Police Vow to Suppress in Response to Threats on their Lives

Tuesday, Jul 23

"I

n the wake of recent police action in combating crime on the island, several threats, including threats of death, have been hurled at members of the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force, in person and increasingly over social media,” explained Assistant Police Commissioner, Luke Defreitas in a statement made on July 23rd.

Since police fatally shot Maxwell Duncan Leo, AKA ‘Henessey’ on July 20th, police say they have received death threats from Leo’s associates.

According to police, Leo was fleeing the scene of a crime aboard a speeding vehicle and refused to comply with a traffic stop.

Inside the vehicle, law enforcement seized a .40 calibre pistol and one spent .40 calibre shell. Leo was on bail for a firearm offence.

ACP Defreitas notes that while citizens have freedom of speech and expression, he reminds the public that threats against citizens’ lives are unlawful.

Whilst the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force respects the rights of citizens to comment on issues of national interest, language that incites or facilitates violence or otherwise constitutes credible threats to members of the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force or any other person for that matter is unlawful.”

ACP Defreitas assures criminal elements that the Force will not take threats against the lives of officers lightly and will pursue criminals tirelessly.

Force condemns those attacks and will do all that is legally possible to protect its members. Investigators will seek to identify and pursue without fail all persons responsible.”

Investigations have yielded in the arrest and charging of suspects in homicides committed earlier this year with law enforcement vowing to keep law and order.
