enTech Analytica, a locally-owned technology firm, is hosting its Bio-Sci Series summer camp for students in secondary school.

The intense course is focused on genetic illnesses which may be found in children and the treatment options available. GenTech Founder and CEO, Devy Frederick, observes that genetic illnesses pose great challenges for parents and families.

Ensuring youth mature with a knowledge of genetic disorders will aid in the fight to formulate treatment medications.

There are a lot of genetic conditions in our population that we have no idea what causes it. For example, Down syndrome - your child has that but you're not sure what to do next. So we saw the need to educate the young students about that, so the next generation is fully aware of that,” he explained.

Frederick recalls his experience as a secondary school student, noting that learning opportunities were not available for him or others. As an adult in the genetics industry, he says he will change that for the current crop of students.

I realized when I was at secondary school as a young student, there weren't any programs like this available. I felt like we needed to start young to ensure that the next 10 years we're fully equipped and fully knowledgeable about the conditions in our population.”

Despite the difficulty of the summer courses, Frederick adds, students should be able to develop an appreciation for genetic studies.

Some of the content can be challenging, I could say that from now but I want them to appreciate the importance of genetics.”

The Bio-Sci series is currently being held at the St. Joseph’s Convent.
