King Says He is Committed to “People and Country”

Monday, Aug 26

"I

f it took a snake to save this country, I'm proud to be a snake,” remarked Infrastructure Minister and former UWP stalwart, Stephenson King, in response to his former political colleagues describing him as a traitor.

Stephenson King, who has been a part of elective politics since the 1980s, was a foundational member of the United Workers’ Party. That was until differences arose between himself and current UWP Leader Allen Chastanet on policies of leadership.

Ahead of the 2021 general election, King announced his decision to contest the Castries North seat under his own banner instead of a UWP ticket. This exit from the UWP was followed by the party’s worst electoral outing since 1997.

King, now a part of the Philip J. Pierre-led SLP Administration, says he is satisfied with the amount of work the coalition government has achieved.

The Infrastructure Minister says a particular emphasis has been placed on vulnerable groups in the society.

With decency and honour, we have been able to do quite a bit for the people of this country…We have seen initiatives which were abandoned and we have seen this government coming in and adopting those programmes, some of them, and introducing new programmes, particularly social programmes for the people, where we are providing the assistance necessary for the Saint Lucian people,” he said during the SLP’s “Walk of Progress” held on August 25th 2024.

Commenting on the current UWP leadership, King says the party has strayed away from its core philosophies.

The Party doesn't represent what I believe in anymore. It has lost its way. It has lost its philosophy, it has lost its decency, it has lost its honour.”
