he local football community is in mourning following the tragic death of 23-year-old Sherman Augustin, a rising football talent whose life was cut short in a fatal stabbing on Carnival Monday, July 21st, in Vigie.

The loss has sent shockwaves across the nation and the diaspora, silencing a career that had only just begun to soar.

Augustin, who recently signed his first international football contract and had proudly represented Saint Lucia in national colours, was known not just for his athletic ability but for his leadership, discipline, and infectious personality. His death has left teammates, coaches, fans, and youth across the island devastated.

It brings deep sadness; even the supporters from overseas have been calling to express their sympathy,” said Darren Gaspard, founder of GMC United Football Club, where Augustin played.

It's a shock to everyone. People saw him just last weekend, full of life, and within 48 hours, he was gone, taken by violence.”

Gaspard noted the club’s focus on youth development and addressing social issues through mentorship.

At our club, we strive to bring in people to speak to the youngsters, to help them deal with their social issues and problems. Sherman was an example of what we hoped for in our youth: focused, driven, and full of promise.”

Dermot Monrose, one of Augustin’s coaches, described him as a natural leader. “The youth teams he played for, we made him the captain because he had that aura about him that people would follow him. He was a natural-born leader who knew how to command attention.”

Coach Monrose also recalled Augustin’s critical role in the club’s promotion campaign. “Coming from Antigua to help us push into the first division, he was a key part of that team. As Coach Baba said, he was a game changer.”

Tributes have poured in from across the region, with many highlighting not just Augustin’s sporting talent, but his humility, respect for others, and determination to uplift those around him.
