AMAICA: A 27-year-old man is currently in police custody for the alleged rape and fatal stabbing of 8-year-old Talia Thompson, a fourth-grade student at Discovery Bay Primary and Infant School in St Ann, according to the police

The suspect, believed to be a neighbour and family friend, reportedly attempted suicide.

Parish commander, Senior Superintendent Dwight Powell, has confirmed the incident. It reportedly occurred sometime after 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 23rd, 2023. Preliminary reports indicate that the man enticed the child to his residence, where he is alleged to have raped her and subsequently stabbed her multiple times in the upper body. Neighbors reported hearing loud noises, prompting an alert, which led to the discovery of the gruesome scene. In addition, four locally manufactured firearms were seized.

Tragically, this marks the second case of an eight-year-old child falling victim to a heinous crime in Jamaica within the past three months. Back in June, the community was left in shock when Danielle Rowe, a student of Braeton Primary School in Portmore, St Catherine, was abducted after school and found later that day on Roosevelt Avenue in St Andrew, her throat brutally slashed. Sadly, she succumbed to her injuries. Furthermore, in February, another eight-year-old, Nikita Noel, suffered a horrifying ordeal, becoming a victim of rape and strangulation. Justice was served in her case, as a man was subsequently convicted for her murder.
