This includes cracking down on the illegal entry of firearms into the region, and assistance for an embattled Haiti police force. Trudeau says his government will aid in the improvement of life in the region for all people.
“To keep people safe across the region, Canada will also invest $3.2 million to address firearms trafficking and proliferation, and deepen coordination between the Canadian Armed Forces and the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency to provide rapid delivery of humanitarian assistance and disaster relief,” The Prime Minister’s Office announced.
The Office also disclosed an injection of CAD 3.4 million into the Haitian National Police for anti-corruption training and to help battle the scourge of gang violence. “To support Haitian-led solutions, Canada will build on previously announced assistance and launch a multi-year training program for the Haitian National Police (HNP) to help tackle gangs, strengthen anti-corruption mechanisms, and support the protection of Haitians afflicted by gang violence,” The release stated.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Canada will now be including climate-resilient debt clauses in its loans to climate-affected countries. This will help countries recover after a natural disaster without the added worry of repaying its debts.
