Norbert Resigns

Tuesday, Feb 27

H

on. Jeremiah Norbert, Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly has resigned effective February 27th, 2024.

Norbert, the Member of Parliament for Micoud North was appointed as the Deputy Speaker in the Philip J Pierre administration following the Saint Lucia Labour Party's 2021 election victory and historic win of the Micoud North seat - a seat never won by the SLP in the electoral history of Saint Lucia.

The appointment of Hon. Norbert, as Deputy Speaker in 2021 had been the first after 5 years in the House of Assembly as the then Prime Minister, Allen Chastanet, had refused to appoint a Deputy Speaker, in what many argued was a constitutional violation. In tabling the motion in 2023, Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre noted that the Bill was intended to shield the Constitution from abuse and uphold its integrity. "This constitutional amendment is to end the violation of Article 36 of the constitution that has taken place for more than five years in this honourable house".

Hon. Jeremiah Norbert has been tapped to lead the Ministry of Home Affairs, a portfolio previously held by Hon. Dr. Virginia Albert-Poyotte who is reportedly seeking medical treatment.

At the next sitting of the House of Assembly, a Deputy Speaker will have to be elected to satisfy the Constitution of Saint Lucia.
