uring his June 19th press statement, Director of Public Prosecutions, Daarsrean Greene suggested that the government create a Special Investigating Agency to probe police-related shootings and other serious matters.

Greene noted during his address that the recommendation for an Independent Investigations Unit was first made to the Chastanet Administration and was accounted for in a February 2021 Cabinet conclusion.

During his recent address this month, Greene added that the Special Prosecutor legislation creates avenues for this Independent Investigating Agency.

I am a bit disappointed in the ambit of the powers of the Special Prosecutor as he deals with matters of corruption in public office. I would have thought that the office of a Special Prosecutor might have combined the resources of a special investigations unit or agency for these purposes,” he said.

Ahead of the sitting of the House on Wednesday, Prime Minister Pierre said while he supports the idea, there is still much in the way of planning and implementation.

In the police force, there is a unit that does investigations. There is a school of thought that says there should be an independent unit. But for these things, you have to decide how you will go about it. It’s not something you can do today. It's an idea that is worth thinking of. It's an idea that you possibly can implement, but it's a work in progress. But it's a good idea,” he acknowledged.

Looming greater than the DPP’s calls for an Independent body is the still unresolved matter of Operation Restore Confidence. During his address, Greene publicised his recommendation to the Police Commissioner that officers involved in two separate shooting incidents be arrested and formally interviewed.

Police Commissioner Descartes-Pelius has also promised an address to the nation from the RSLPF’s standpoint to outline their next steps.
