Double Homicide Recorded in Vieux Fort

t approximately 9:20 pm on Sunday 27th August, reports of a double homicide reverberated from the community of Vieux Fort.

 Bullet shells were seen in the area where a scooter collided with a poll near the Aupicon Gap.

There are no further details at the time of publication.

In March 2023 Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre passed the Suppression of Escalated Crime [Police Powers] Act which saw the designation of Vieux Fort as an “Escalated Crime Area”. The policy which entailed additional police powers, the recruiting of the RSS, intensified local police presence, and a display of a new fleet of vehicles and other crime-fighting resources saw a lull in gun violence, particularly in the designated. However – August has recorded an uptick in fire exchange of what is considered gang violence and revenge killing.

Saint Lucia, like the rest of the Caribbean region, has not been spared the dumping of firearms and ammunition from the United States. The islands are seen as a gateway to Europe where the demand for illegal arms continues to grow. Heads of Government have termed the littering of arms from the United States as “Crime and Violence as a Public Health Issue” with little assistance of abatement from the source market.
