Police Commissioner Pelius Breaks Silence on 7 Homicides

"T

he only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing,” said Police Commissioner Cruscita Descartes-Pelius.

Saint Lucia has recorded 7 homicides thus far for 2024, all of them resulting from gun violence. These killings point to the access and availability of illegal arms which enter the country through various channels.

Police Commissioner Pelius says an attitude of intolerance against crime needs to be cultivated in society as police enforce the laws. She asserts that crime reduction is not only the job of the police’s.

Collectively, we will take a stance against this lawlessness…It is time for resounding outcry and stern admonishment, accompanied by forceful reminders that such practices will not be tolerated…The belief that the mammoth task of crime reduction is solely that of the police to shoulder is one we quickly need to dispel,” Pelius contended.

Pelius adds that the effects of crime touch the lives of all corners of society. As such, she says, it is the responsibility of all citizens to help fight crime.

We have seen that crime has far-reaching tentacles. No area is immune to its effects. So it is everyone's responsibility to contribute to the fight against crime.”

She urges citizens to report the tips they know of. This, she says, aids police operations.

It is impossible for the police to know and act unless you stand up and report it. Let us cease the practice of enabling a cycle of violence. As a nation, we cannot allow ourselves to become a population grappled with fear.”

The government has also embarked on social and after-school programmes to help deter youth from criminal activities.
