CPP member, Senator Noorani Azeez, says the aim is to train men in positive conflict resolution skills, as well as, responding to some of the social needs of vulnerable communities across the island. These operations are in full swing, he says, ahead of schools’ September 4th reopening.
“We have been very targeted in our efforts to address deviant behaviour and at-risk youth at a community level. We have noticed young men primarily and their inability to resolve conflict among themselves”, he observed. Azeez says to counteract this behaviour, CPP has been providing the youth with counselling support and employment and entrepreneurial opportunities. “Over the past few months, we’ve been using a number of activities including one-on-one engagement, conflict mediation, sports, education, as well as exposing them to new experiences at touristic and other levels to expand their scope and horizon.”
Azeez’s statements nearly one month after the establishment of the Strategic Education for Economic Development and Support resource centre in the southern town of Vieux Fort. This facility will provide a range of psychosocial services for residents of the area. Azeez says in the coming weeks, “[they] are going to be putting a course plan together so the public can be aware of the work in the background, as well as future plans.”
This movement, according to Azeez, is geared at curbing youth delinquency by reducing stigma and increasing positive action.
