"Y

ou have to go [to university] with the mindset that you're going to better yourself to come back and contribute to the development and advancement of this country,” remarked Education Minister Shawn Edward as 54 Saint Lucians depart to pursue higher education at various universities across the globe.

Minister Edward, an educator himself, encouraged students to use the opportunity abroad to acquire skills which will aid in the development of Saint Lucia.

This year, a new scholarship, the Public Health Scholarship, is allowing 3 students to study medicine in Taiwan.

14 students will be studying in Cuba, 35 in Taiwan and 5 in Hungary across numerous fields of academia.

The education you'll be attending in Taiwan is not yours, it belongs to the state. Because before you, there are others who went, and today they are back making their contribution to the development of this country. And that foundation was laid so you can build on it.”

On the part of the government, however, the Minister assured that the government will provide opportunities for students to study abroad.

As a government, we have promised that we will go to every nook and cranny of this globe to find a scholarship, wherever they are, to make them available for the young people of Saint Lucia so that they can realise their dreams,” he said.

The Minister disclosed that the government has provided university assistance to approximately 700 young Saint Lucians.

Scholarships in Morocco, scholarships in Taiwan, scholarships in Cuba, the Monroe first generation, and the traditional Monroe Scholarships program, and there's so many others,” he explained.

Students studying in Cuba were the first to leave Saint Lucia on Sunday, August 11th, 2024.
